Children’s Health Insurance Program for Single Mothers

The Children’s Health Insurance Program can be a great healthcare assistance options for single mothers to help them ensure that their children are covered for medical and dental care services. This page has been designed to help you see what CHIP is, how it works, and how you can apply for benefits.

What CHIP Is:

Single mothers often fret over their children’s healthcare coverage, but the Children’s Health Insurance Plan can help eliminate the need to buy health insurance for your kids. Children that are covered by CHIP receive low-cost healthcare services, and it is an alternative if you earn too much in order to qualify for the federal Medicaid healthcare assistance program.

How It Works:

Have a question? Email us here anything that troubles you.

The Centers for Medicaid and CHIP administer federal block grants on local state levels, and they can determine whether or not your children are eligible for benefits. Once your children are accepted to the Children’s Health Insurance Program, you’ll be issued with an enrollment card. This card is preloaded with healthcare credits which can then be used to pay for basic medical and dental care services, which are to be obtained though registered program service providers.

If your child is in a medical emergency, they can be taken to the closets hospital, even if the hospital is not part of the CHIP network. Once they have assed your child’s condition and established that they are not in a critical condition, your child will be relocated to an accredited CHIP healthcare institution.

Children that are covered by CHIP have to visit doctors that accept CHIP, but services are limited to basic medical and dental procedures. The CHIP enrollment card also allows your child to have their prescription medications filled at participating pharmacies, usually at a low cost or for free.

How to Apply:

Single mothers that would like to get their children covered can apply for their local Children’s Health Insurance Program (which may be referred to as something other than CHIP, depending on which state you reside in). Applications can be made through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Alternatively, you can also apply for CHIP by contacting your local Medicaid Office. The details of your local office can be found on the federal Healthcare website.

Once you have submitted your application, your credentials will be reviewed, after which you might be contacted in order to attend an interview. This step isn’t always necessary, but some state offices do require seeing applicants before benefits can be granted.

If you are successful in your application, you will be given a benefit card, which will contain your child’s personal information. This card can then be used to obtain discounted medical and dental care services at participating healthcare providers.

We hope that this guide has been helpful in making single mothers aware about how CHIP can enrich the lives of their children, even if they do not have the funds to pay for health insurance.
