About The Arts Writers Grant

The Arts Writers grant was created to support emerging and established writers alike, provided they write about contemporary visual art. This grant is no slouch, the amount ranges from a hefty $15,000 all the way to an eye popping $50,000 over four different categories; books, blogs, articles, and short-form writing. Any writer, so long as they meet the requirements, can apply.

The Arts Writers Grant Program was created to recognize both the sometimes precarious financial situation of art writers and also to take note of their profound contribution to the  artistic culture. All funding is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Creative Capital is in charge of administration.

How to Apply for The Arts Writers Grant

To apply for the grant you need to head to this page and create an account. Once you have done that, you can apply online by filling out their easy application. However, before you do that first check the eligibility guidlines. They are as follows:

• You must be an individual, not a company, foundation, etc.
• You must be applying regarding a contemporary visual art project.
• You must be an artist, curator, critic, journalist, art historian who is heavily engaged with the contemporary visual arts scene.
• You must be  a Citizen or permanent resident of the United States of America, or alternately hold an O-1 Visa.
• You must be a minimum of twenty-five years old.
• Lastly, you must be a writer with published works (specific requirements will vary depending on which category of grant you apply for).

The Arts Writers Grant classifies contemporary visual art as any visual art that has been created since WW2. Now, if you meet the above criteria, be sure you also do not meet any of the criteria for being ineligible, such as:

• You may not apply on behalf of any organization.
• You man not submit an application for a project in which your main involvement is editor only.
• You cannot be a full-time student who is also in a degree grant program.
• You are prohibited from applying for an interpretive essay on your own work.
• You cannot apply if your project doesn’t address contemporary visual art directly.
• You cannot apply for a project for a MA thesis or a PhD dissertation.
• Applications for Q&A interview are prohibited.
• You cannot apply to create a database or archive
• You are ineligible if your project will end up in a commercial gallery.
• Lastly, you cannot be a current consultant, funder, board member or employee of the Andy Warhol Foundation or Creative Capital. Nor can you be an immediate family member of said persons.

About the Arts Writers Grant Program

This program was launched in 2006 as part of an initiative created to help support progressive and independent art publications and art writers. The Andy Warhol Foundation, who funds the Arts Writers Grant, realized that past methods of advocacy and support for the art writing category, were becoming scant. This grant was created to allow writers more time to focus on their writing projects, as well as explore new topics and conduct new research in the field.

As a single mother and also an arts writer, this grant money could really be a game changer. The qualifications are fairly strict and the competition is no doubt tough, but all would be worth it in the event of winning that $50,000!
