Cash Assistance for single mothers
Nevada has a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program that provide cash assistance if you qualify. In addition, a number of the non-profit groups listed on this page will provide some amount of emergency cash assistance for single mothers when needed, so be sure to ask.
Food assistance for single mothers
Nevada participates in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, or what used to be called Food Stamps). Other immediate help with food can be found on the extensive listing of the Nevada 2-1-1 website, which lists 67 different groups and programs where you can get food from food banks, food pantries, and soup kitchens in and around Las Vegas.

Help with Shelter and Housing
Whether its emergency shelter, assistance with rent payments, or assistance with home ownership issues, the Nevada 2-1-1 website lists 50 different groups and programs that can help single moms.
Help with Energy and Utilities
NV Energy has two different programs that can help pay utility bills (Project REACH and SAFE). But there is also the State of Nevada Energy Assistance Program. In addition, many of the non-profit groups listed on this page or in the “Help from Other Groups” section will also provide emergency utility bill assistance for single mothers if you ask.
Help with Telephone and Internet Bills
Nevada and many of its phone carriers participate in the Lifeline program to provide help with telephone bills.
Childcare grants for single moms
The Children’s Cabinet Subsidy Program is a financial assistance program for eligible single mothers who are working or seeking employment. The Las Vegas Urban League’s Child Care Subsidy Program provides financial assistance to income eligible families who struggle with the high cost of child care. These are the two main groups that receive Child Care Subsidy Program funding from the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services in Nevada’s Department of Health and Human Services. The Sunrise Children’s Foundation runs Early Head Start programming in Las Vegas. Regular Head Start programming in Las Vegas is handled by Acelero Learning.
Help with Medical and Dental Care
Nevada’s Department of Health and Human Services offers a variety of Medical Assistance Programs. In addition, if you scroll down the Nevada list at NeedMyMeds, you’ll find 29 different options for receiving low-cost, sliding-scale, or free medical and dental care in and around Las Vegas. The Free Clinic Directory also has a list with around 25 options.
Help with Legal Matters
The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to providing civil legal services to the most vulnerable in the greater Las Vegas community. Nevada Legal Services is another group with an office in Las Vegas that works to strengthen the community by ensuring fairness and providing equal access to justice for low-income Nevadans.
Help with Financial Counseling
Springboard is a group that helps with all kinds of financial counseling programs. The Women’s Development Center (WDC) runs a Homeownership Services Program that provides various educational and financial counseling services to low-income families and individuals to put them on the path to home ownership. The Financial Guidance Center can also help, previously known as Consumer Credit Counseling Service.
