Roughly 25% of women over the age of 18 have been victims of domestic violence in America, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. That’s a lot of people who have experienced this traumatic situation and they usually need some type of help to get out of the situation, and often times to thrive once they do. Many women who have been victims of domestic violence go on to be a single mother, which means they may struggle financially.
The good news is that there are programs that provide help for single mothers who were victims of domestic violence. The programs can do a lot to help single mothers, ranging from providing them with a place to stay while they get on their feet after leaving the violent relationship to giving them clothing and other supplies. No matter what it is that single moms need there is likely a program out there that can help.

Domestic Shelters – This is an organization that will help you find a shelter to go to. The goal of the organization is to provide women who are victims of domestic violence with shelter information, so they can go to the shelter. Being able to get away from the person who is being violent is the first and crucial step. They can help you find options in your area or another area if you would like to get out of the area you live in. It is a free service that they offer. Some women remain in violent and abusive relationships because they don’t have another house to go to, or they feel they cannot afford to live on their own. Churches – Your local churches should be an important resource to help with domestic violence issues. Contact them to see if they can help your situation. They should be able to help you directly or provide referrals to local places that can help. Their mission is usually to help those in the community who need assistance.
Domestic violence is that which takes place in the home, where people should feel safe. It may be at the hands of a spouse, boyfriend, or other friend or family member. Those who have or are experiencing domestic violence should seek help immediately. If there is an emergency situation they can call 911, otherwise they can reach out to the above organizations for help. They will provide the assistance needed to get into a new place to live, have all of your basic needs met, and get the legal help you need to remain away from the violent person.
