Making calls on your home telephone seems like such an integral part of home-life, but the costs can be crippling at times. Luckily, the U.S. government offers low-income families the opportunity to receive discounted telephone service cost, and they also offer a program to help cut the costs of your internet services. This page will show you what the programs are all about, who can apply, what the benefits are, and how to apply for discounts.
Phone Bill Assistance Overview:
LifeLine & Link-Up Program for Low-Income Consumers
LifeLine is the Federal Communication Commission’s telephone discount program that allows low-income families to connect with the world at a more affordable rate. The LifeLine program provides participating households with a monthly discount on their telephone service if they work through an approved service provider that participates in the program. The program also allows for discounted broadband purchases to be made at participating providers.
Low-income subscribers can qualify to receive a discount of up to $9.25 on their monthly phone bills, which can be applied to either their wireline or their wireless service, but it cannot be used on both lines. The LifeLine program can only be applied to one service line per household. The Link-up service was designed to help residents of Tribal Lands pay for their connection fees in order to participate in the LifeLine program.

Residents of all United States territories and states can apply for LifeLine benefits, but they do have to meet a set of eligibility requirements before benefits can be granted. These requirements include the fact that households must have a joined income that meets or is below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, but they may also qualify for benefits if they already participate in certain federal assistance programs such as TANF and SNAP.
Prospective applicants can use the pre-screening tool to determine your eligibility for the LifeLine program, which can be found on the LifeLine services administration website, a link that’s provided via the FCC’s website.
