Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for single mothers

Too many people in America know hunger. Some feel it every day. Some feel it all the time. There are adults and children that are chronically underfed and undernourished. If you or your family need help with food don’t hesitate to take advantage of all the services and food sources designed for the specific purpose to help provide nutritious food to those who need it.

Connecticut Mission of Mercy (CTMOM)

The Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach (CFDO) was founded in November of 2007 as a consortium of individuals from the oral health care sector who sought to collaborate to improve the oral health of the underserved and working poor in the state of Connecticut. The first year of treatment was in 2008.

The organization provides a two-day dental care clinic to the uninsured and underserved in Connecticut. According to CTMOM, oral health is part of overall general health and can affect a person’s self-esteem, compromise their ability to work, attend school and lead a normal life. Weatherization

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides grants to states, territories, and some Indian tribes to improve the energy efficiency of the homes of low-income families. These governments, in turn, contract with local governments and nonprofit agencies to provide weatherization services to those in need using the latest technologies for home energy upgrades. Operation Fuel Bank

Operation Fuel Bank is a private, non-profit energy assistance program for people who need emergency help with energy bills and are not eligible for state or federal assistance. In general eligible households have incomes between 151% and 200% of the federal poverty level. The maximum Operation Fuel assistance available is $250 per household for the heating season. Payments are made directly to the company that supplies the household with the heating fuel or utility services.

Applications are made at the local fuel bank. Single mothers are encouraged to make an appointment and should bring verification of income and their latest fuel or utility bill.

Home of Hope

Are you a single mom with kids and currently homeless? There is help to get your life back on track for you and your children. The Home of Hope is a one-year transitional housing program for single mothers with children who are homeless. The group provides support and help to each woman to work with identifying the steps necessary to achieve safe, secure housing for themselves and their children. Home of Hope provides safe shelter, food, clothing, counseling and community referrals. Finding appropriate child care is another area the organization can help with for women in the program.
